Nutritional Health and Healing in Chinese Medicine

“Doctors should first understand the cause of disease and treat it with diet. Medicine should only be used if diet fails.” Sun Si-miao (6th century Chinese physician)

This statement sums up one of the core principles of Chinese medicine. The Chinese medical tradition teaches us about the power of food to harm and to heal. This class will provide you with a basic understanding of the principles of dietary therapy and their application. Students will analyze their own physical and emotional constitutions and learn which foods will improve their health and well-being. Eating to treat common conditions and to prevent seasonal diseases will be explained, along with recipes for teas, congees, soups and stir-fries. We will cultivate a deeper understand of “the unity of humans and nature” by discussing the resonance between cycles of yin and yang in the environment and the rhythms of our own energy.
