Weifang, Shandon

Let’s Go Fly a Kite

The annual Weifang International Kite Festival takes place from April 20-25. It’s a favorite trip for kite fans and families alike. The highlight is hundreds of kite lovers taking their winged creations to the beach and sending them into the sky. Weifang, on the Shandong coast, is one of China’s three famous kite-making cities (along with Beijing and Tianjin). Shops in town sell magnificent examples which make fantastic souvenirs. Also visit Yangjiabu village where kite makers ply their ancient trade. WestChina puts together a three-day trip. For ¥2,000 get two nights, round-trip transport and a guide. Check out some cool photos here.

Putting on the Ritz

The Ritz-Carlton Sanya celebrates its one-year anniversary in April with a special room promotion. For ¥1,50 (excluding tax) get a night in a Garden View Room plus complimentary breakfast. Anyone who stays at this luxurious Yalong Bay resort in April is also entered into the grand prize drawing for a package worth ¥50,000 and if your birthday actually falls on April 25, you get a special surprise.

Pinggu, Beijing

Peachy Picnic

Peach blossoms bloom in north China in April, filling the air with an intoxicating scent and coloring the countryside. On April 11 and 17, WestChina heads to Pinggu east of Beijing for a day trip to enjoy this unique moment. Start with a tasty barbecue lunch then go for an invigorating hike through a beautiful gorge. Families welcome. ¥290 (includes transport and lunch).

Overland Adventure

The rice terraces of Guangxi are a classic expat trip, and on this four-day adventure, you’ll not only see them, you’ll hike through them. This Electric Pagoda trip starts on the banks of a river in the village of Chengyang which still has numerous old bridges and waterwheels. You’ll then head for the village of Dazhai where the 15 km hike begins. ¥6,50 (includes accommodation and round-trip airfare), April 23-26.
